According to the statistics, only about 9 % of plastics are being “recycled”.

And even though it is a small number, it is also a very vague one, as the so-called recycling consists of the so-called “mechanic recycling”, which is a simple crushing or milling of the products and their further use to produce other products. Mostly, this refers to PET bottles or tires, however:

 

- PET bottles, the mechanical recycling can be repeated only up to 5 times, then the so-called “regranulate” no more provides the quality required for PET bottle production (firmness, water retention), and can only be used for the manufacturing of fleece clothing or low-quality rugs. Only about 50 PET bottles are needed for one fleece jacket and it can never be mechanically recycled anymore.

 

- Tires, no tire manufacturer has allowed the use of granulate or dust from old tires for the manufacturing of new ones! Experiments are being concluded with the maximum of 3-5 % of regranulate, but only for a narrow number of specialized kinds of tires (construction machines, agricultural machines) that have lower requirements for strength under high speed. To tell the truth, people are desperately and without any real solution, looking for a way to use the regranulate. The production of children’s playground surfaces or anti-vibration insulation under tramway tracks can use only about 0,005 % of the whole volume of tire production. When added to asphalt, it leads to quicker wear of the road and USA records several occasions when such “enhanced” roads caught fire. Also, these recycled tires do continuously and very eagerly (roads, children’s playgrounds) release microplastics that end up in our food chain.

So what is the solution for the growing waste polution?

When it comes to scientists, there is only one true recycling and that is the so-called “to-raw material recycling”. In other words, such a treatment that transforms the products back to true raw materials, the same as they were at the start of their production. Only 0,8 % of plastics are now being processed by to-raw material recycling technology every year!
